Huskers Drop Hard Fought Match vs. #15 PSU

Lincoln, Neb. - Despite holding #15 Penn State to just seven shots on the day, the Nebraska soccer team dropped a hard fought 1-0 match to the Nittany Lions at Hibner Stadium in front of 1,353 fans.

Overall, the Huskers held the advantage in shots (17-7), while the teams were tied with four corners a piece. With the loss, Nebraska falls to 4-7-0 overall and 1-4-0 in Big Ten play, while Penn State improves to 9-3-1 (3-2-0 Big Ten). 

Penn State scored in the 16th minute of the game to take the early 1-0 lead as Mieke Schiermann found the back of the net. For the Huskers, the first half was highlighted by a pair of shots by Sarah Weber, who is currently third in the country in shots per game. In the 20th minute, Abbey Schwarz passed to Jordan Zade who sent a cross into the box, which was headed by Weber into the crossbar. Then in the 38th minute, Weber got another ball in the box that she shot, but was saved by the Penn State goalie.

In the first 45 minutes overall, Nebraska led in shots (7-3) and corners (3-1), while both teams were tied with two shots on goal apiece. Individually, Weber led the way with five shots, as she continues to hold third place all-time in Husker history with 309 career shots.

The Huskers came out firing in the second half as Sadie Waite recorded two quick shots followed by a few more Weber chances. The Nebraska defense impressed, holding Penn State to just four shots overall, but NU was unable to record the equalizer and even the score. Weber added four more shots, while five other Huskers tallied shots of their own, but the Nittany Lions held on for the 1-0 victory.

Sami Hauk got the start in goal, recording four saves and playing the entire 90 minutes. Hauk was joined by Lauryn Anglim, Reese Borer and Weber in playing the complete game.  

The Huskers travel to Wisconsin to face the Badgers on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 1 p.m. (CT). The match will be streamed on Big Ten Plus and live stats can be found on Huskers.com.
