Huskers Drop Hard-Fought Match to Portland

Portland, Ore. - Despite holding the advantage in shots and keeping the Pilots scoreless for more than 80 minutes, the Nebraska soccer team (3-3-0) dropped the hard-fought match to Portland (4-2-1) 1-0 on Sunday afternoon. 

The Nebraska offense was highlighted by five Huskers recording shots in the first half, as NU outshot Portland 6-3, but the Huskers were unable to capitalize and the teams entered halftime, 0-0. 

In the opening a little over 10 minutes in the second half, Sarah Weber tallied three shots (two on goal), but the Huskers couldn’t find the net past the Pilot goalie. 

Portland had a few chances of their own late in the second half, but Cece Villa held her own and recorded three saves, but then in the 84th minute, the Pilots were awarded a penalty kick and Cally Togiai scored into the bottom right corner of the net.

With less than three minutes to go, the Huskers came close to scoring the equalizer as Weber took a shot off a cross from Jordan Zade and Ella Guyott recorded a shot on goal, but the Pilot’s came up with the save and the 1-0 victory. 

Overall, NU held the advantage in shots (14-6), shots on goal (5-4) and corners (8-2). Villa played the entire 90 minutes, along with Haley Peterson, Reese Borer, Emma Prososki, Lauryn Anglim, Gwen Lane and Weber. Offensively, Weber and Guyott tallied three shots a piece, while Peterson, Florence Belzile and Prososki all added two. 

Up next, NU stays on the road and will start Big Ten competition at Iowa on Thursday, Sept. 12. Action is set for 7 p.m. (CT) and will be streamed on Big Ten Plus.
