BSAA Travels to Omaha for Annual North Omaha Legacy Tour

On Sunday, November 10th, 12 Husker student-athletes from the Black Student Athlete Association (BSAA) traveled to Omaha for the North Omaha Legacy Tour hosted by Preston Love Jr., a member of the first group of black football student-athletes at Nebraska in 1964, the Magnificent 8.

"Throughout my time of being in Lincoln I've never explored the other cities, as I got the opportunity to see North Omaha on the BSAA trip, it opened my eyes to all the cultural equivalents that are really in my backyard," Track and Field Athlete Ashriel Dixon said.

The student-athletes visited the birth site of Malcolm X, where the group was able to meet the executive secretary Karen Gamble and receive books as a courtesy from the Malcolm X Foundation. Additionally, they visited The Terrance "Bud" Crawford Gym and ate dinner at the restaurant of former football player and co-owner Vershaun Jackson at Jackson's Cafe, while hearing about the impact and contributions the city of North Omaha has had on the community.

"The BSAA trip was amazing,” Softball Athlete Samantha Bland said. “It was a super cool experience to be able to tour and learn the history of North Omaha.”

"The North Omaha tour was a great experience knowing that lives were touched by leaders, fighters and speakers all who were Black,” Track and Field Athlete Abrielle Artley said.
