Huskers Down RedHawks 6-1

The No. 36 Nebraska women’s tennis team improved to 9-1 on Friday night with a 6-1 victory over the Miami (OH) RedHawks. Earning their eighth doubles point of the season and five singles victories, the Huskers notched their fifth consecutive win, while the RedHawks fell to 0-5.

The Friday night dual started with doubles action against the RedHawks. Emma Rizzetto and Tiziana Rossini improved to 4-0 in the spring, with a 6-4 win over Saravanan/Denysiewicz on Court Two. Ana Zamburek and Lucy Loy claimed their first win as a duo on Court One, clinching the doubles point using a 6-3 victory against Valentinsson/Zalukar. Reya Lee Coe and Maria Taranova’s match at No. 3 doubles was left unfinished, tied at 4-4.

With the doubles point claimed, NU took on singles play. Five Huskers took their first sets, and Coe was the first to close her match. The sophomore defeated Valentinsson, 6-1, 6-1, for another Big Red point and her sixth spring singles win. Rossini notched the next singles win, taking down Malu Oliveira, 6-2, 6-1 on Court Five.

Up 3-0, Rizzetto clinched the match from Court Two. The sophomore notched her tenth win at NU, defeating Zalukar, 6-3, 6-2. At No. 3 singles, Taranova used a dominant 10-point tiebreaker to win over Saravanan, 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 [10-2]. On Court Six, Loy battled but fell to Lauren Joyce, 6-4, 6-4. Zamburek was the last to finish, closing on Court One over Denysiewicz, 6-4, 7-5.

With the win, the Huskers stay on track with their 2023-24 start, improving to 9-1. The dual victory notched head coach German Dalmagro’s 23rd with NU, early into his second season in Lincoln. Taranova claimed her 15th singles win of the year, and Zamburek her 40th career singles victory. The Huskers are now 4-0 against Miami (OH) all-time.
