Lincoln, Neb. - After going 11-0 over the weekend, the No. 1 Nebraska bowling team won the Big Red Invitational, tallying a total pinfall of 12,234 with a 218.5 average.
The Cornhuskers matched up with No. 13 McKendree in their first round best-of-seven baker match. The Huskers started with Brenna Hartzler, Desiree Buchert, Kayla Verstraete, Kayla Starr and Jillian Martin. Behind five-consecutive strikes in game one, the Huskers bowled a clean 246, topping the Bearcats, 246-219. NU bowled another clean game in game two, scoring a 225 to go up 2-0. In the third, the Big Red tallied nine strikes and took down McKendree, 227-213. Hartzler recorded her seventh-straight strike in game four, but the Bearcats’ 256 topped Nebraska, bringing the match to 3-1. The Cornhuskers finished off the Bearcats, 227-194, in game five, taking the match 4-1.
The Big Red moved on to face No. 7 Wichita State in the final match of the tournament. The Huskers started hot in game one, recording 10 strikes including eight to end the game, winning 279-185. Martin bowled her sixth-consecutive strike in game two, but the Shockers topped the Cornhuskers, 224-199. NU regained the lead in game three, taking down Wichita State, 225-212. The Huskers rolled a 199 in game four and were topped by the Shockers’ clean 230. In the fifth, Starr hit her fifth-straight strike as Nebraska scored a 223, gaining the match lead, 3-2. Verstraete led the way for the Big Red in game six, tallying her sixth consecutive strike as the Cornhuskers bowled a 227, taking down Wichita State, 227-169, to win the match, 4-2.
Four Huskers finished in the top 15 for individual performances. Three members of the Big Red finished on the All-Tournament team, Verstraete was second overall with a total pinfall of 923 and a 230.75 average. Martin was in third with a total pinfall of 917 and average of 229.25. Hartzler finished in fourth with a total pinfall of 869 and a 217.25 average. Starr was in 14th with a total pinfall of 800 with a 200 average.
The Huskers return to the lanes Apr. 4-5, at the NCAA regionals.
