Huskers Begin Big Ten Play in Illinois

With a 7-3 start to its spring season, the No. 48 Nebraska men’s tennis team looks to open conference competition and continue its win streak on the road this weekend against No. 20 Illinois and Northwestern.

The Huskers will begin in Champaign-Urbana, Ill., against the Fighting Illini on Friday, March 7 at 6 p.m. (CT) before continuing the weekend in Evanston, Ill., on Sunday, March 9 at 12 p.m. (CT) against the Wildcats. Streams and live stats for both matches will be linked on huskers.com.

The Huskers have won three matches in a row with most recent wins against Ole Miss, Tulsa and Creighton. Doubles duo Leo Linquet and Joan Torres Espinosa are 7-4, while Calvin Mueller leads the team in singles with a record of 6-3 in the spring and a singles ranking of No. 81. Behind a 6-2 spring record, doubles pair Anton Shepp and Lars Johann are ranked No. 41.

NU looks to improve on its 2023-24 spring season finish of 17-10. The team reached the Big Ten Tournament semifinals for the first time in program history, and concluded with the most dual wins in a season since 1990. The Big Red finished with a national ranking of No. 49, and Mueller being named First Team All-Big Ten.

Illinois (6-3, 0-0 Big Ten)
History: NU trails 3-13

Illinois is looking to win its third-straight conference opener on Friday. The Fighting Illini wrapped up non-conference play with a 4-0 loss to No. 3 Ohio State last week as the teams met in a non-Big Ten match. Illinois’ season is highlighted by wins over No. 12 Michigan, Notre Dame, Clemson and North Carolina. Kenta Miyoshi is ranked No. 12 and William Mroz is No. 48 in this week’s singles rankings. The Huskers won the most recent meeting between the teams at the 2024 Big Ten Tournament, 4-2.

Northwestern (7-7, 0-0 Big Ten)
History: NU trails 2-13

Northwestern will open Big Ten play against No. 58 Wisconsin on Friday before hosting Nebraska on Sunday. The Wildcats are on a three-match winning streak with victories over Marquette, Northern Kentucky and Chicago State. Northwestern has no ranked singles or doubles players, but freshman Vincent Yang earned this week’s Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor after winning his doubles and singles matches last weekend. In the most recent matchup between the two teams, Nebraska topped Northwestern in Lincoln, 6-1.
