Huskers Wrap Up Day One at Florida, Stanford

Nebraska track and field wrapped up the first day of competition at the Florida Relays and the Stanford Invitational as a trio of Huskers tallied top-three finishes. 

Nebraska now has four male javelin throwers in the top 10 all-time list as four Huskers placed in the top eight in the event. Dash Sirmon finished third (78.26m, 256-9), Arthur Petersen placed fifth (76.57m, 251-2), Keyshawn Strachan threw 74.11m (243-1) to grab sixth and a fifth-best all-time mark and Hayden Gorovitz rounded out the group in eighth (70.09m, 229-11), the 10th-farthest mark in school history. 

In the women’s javelin, Maddie Harris finished third (56.09m, 184-0), Eniko Sara placed fourth with a PR 55.78m (183-0), Emanuela Casadei was fifth (52.78m, 173-2) and Jenessa Ruder earned seventh (50.59m, 165-11). 

Velecia Williams jumped 6.13m (20-1 ½) to place fifth and Lishanna Ilves hit 5.87m (19-3 ¼) to finish seventh in the women’s long jump invite. 

In the invite division of the women’s high jump, two Huskers finished in the top eight as Karsyn Leeling took sixth, clearing a personal-best 1.79m (5-10 ½), and Ela Velepec placed seventh, going 1.76m (5-9 ¼). In the collegiate division of the high jump, Brooklyn Miller cleared 1.72m (5-7 ¾) for seventh place, while Riley Masten was ninth (1.67m, 5-5 ¾). 

In the open men’s long jump, Kavian Kerr grabbed a runner-up finish, as he jumped 7.50m (24-7 ¼), and Balvin Israel placed 12th (7.01m, 23-0). 

Kalynn Meyer competed in the discus for the first time this season, grabbing a seventh-place finish in the invite division as she threw 53.58m (175-9). 

In the men’s 1500m, Kaleb Sharp ran a personal-best 3:55.19 to place 11th. 

Cammy Garabian and Hillevi Carlsson made their outdoor season debut in the hammer throw, as Garabian placed 12th (59.84m, 196-4) and Garabian finished 13th (59.76m, 196-1). On the men’s side, Brett Schwartz threw 58.15m (190-9) for 21st place.  

Abrielle Artley ran 1:02.15 in the women’s 400mH for 36th, while on the men’s side, James Ledbetter placed 18th with a time of 52.33. In the 4x400m preliminaries, the women (Timeke-Jade Coetzee, Luciana Medina, Abrielle Artley, Kelsie Belquist) finished 18th (3:45.83) and the men (James Ledbetter, Logan Lebo, Holden Ruse, Pradeep Senthilkumar) placed 20th (3:13.93).  

At the Mike Fanelli Classic hosted by San Francisco State, Grant Wasserman finished eighth in the 3000m steeplechase, as he ran a personal-best 9:05.65. In the men’s 10000m, Trevor Acton also ran a personal-best, 30:51.83, for 24th. 

At the Stanford Invitational, Berlyn Schutz ran the second-fastest 5000m in Husker history, as she finished in 15:57.43 for 27th place. Ali Bainbridge also posted a top two all-time mark as she ran 33:31.88 in the 10000m to finish 25th. In the 3000m steeplechase, Cami Merickel ran 10:30.75 to break into the all-time rankings and finish 25th. On the men's side, Hannes Fahl ran 3:47.46 in the 1500m to place 27th. 

Up next, the Huskers continue competition tomorrow at both the Stanford Invitational and the Pepsi Florida Relays.
