Ann Arbor, Mich.- The No. 4 Nebraska men’s gymnastics team placed third with a 322.850 at the Big Ten Championships. The top 10 from each event earned their spot in the Big Ten Individual Finals on Saturday, April 5, at 6 p.m. (CT). The meeting will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network. Nebraska had 11 gymnasts qualify for individual finals. Michigan clinched the title with a 330.750. Penn State scored 323.850 for second and NU was third. Illinois took fourth with 320.950 Ohio State earned fifth with a 315.950.
First Rotation
Yanni Chronopoulos kicked off the competition for the Huskers on parallel bars, scoring a 13.75. Sophomore Cole Partridge hit a 13.55 on the bars. Joey Pepe hit a career-high of 14.20 on his event for a third-place finish. Big Ten Gymnast of the Year Taylor Christopulos had a 13.20 to round out a team score of 54.70 on the apparatus.
Second Rotation
Chronopoulos started the second straight event with an 11.75 on high bar. Partridge followed in seventh place with a 12.90. Sophomore Max Odden hit a 13.25 routine for eighth place. Christopulos anchored the event with a team-high of 13.30, finishing ninth. Nebraska had a 51.150 for the routine.
Third Rotation
Junior Nathan York began a rally for the Huskers with a 13.65 on floor. Luke James had a 13.50 for his routine. Chase Mondi nabbed a 13.20, and Christopulos came in with a 13.90, putting him in third place in the All-Around competition. Nebraska had a team score of 55.25. All Huskers qualified for the individual finals.
Fourth Rotation
Chronopulos started off with a 12.70 on pommel horse. Travis Wong put up a 12.65 and York hit a 12.95. Christopulos matched Wong with a 12.65. The Huskers notched a 50.90 on the apparatus. Nebraska stood at 212.000 heading into rings.
Fifth Rotation
James Friedman started off on rings with a 13.50, and Asher Cohen hit an exemplary routine for a 14.00. Olympic Alternate Chronopoulos stuck his ring routine to surpass Cohen for a 14.05, tying for first place. Senior Chris Hiser finished for the team earning a 13.70, pushing the Huskers to third place heading into the final rotation. Big Red had all competitors make the still rings individual final.
Christopulos and competed on the apparatus sticking his dismount for a career-high of 13.75, putting him in third place before the vault.
Sixth Rotation
James tied his career high of 14.20 on the vault and placed eighth. York hit a 14.05 to tie for twelfth. Mondi had a 14.30 on the apparatus, securing seventh place. Christopulos finished the competition for Big Red with a 13.05.
All-Around
Team Captain Christopulos placed third with a score of 79.80. He came behind Michigan’s Paul Juda (81.75 and Fred Richards).
Up next, 11 Huskers will compete in the individual finals on April 5, at 6 p.m. (CT). The meet will be broadcasted on the Big Ten Network.
