Huskers Punch Ticket to NCAA Final Four

Pittsburgh, Pa. - The Nebraska bowling team defeated Maryville in the Pittsburgh Regional finals, securing a spot in the Final Four at the 2025 NCAA Bowling Championships in Las Vegas, Nev. 

Nebraska started the regional finals off against Maryville who won against Arkansas State earlier in the day. The Big Red started the traditional match with Brenna Hartzler, Anna Callan, Kayla Verstraete, Kayla Starr and Jillian Martin. The freshman, Starr, led the Huskers in scoring, tallying nine strikes and rolling a 247. Verstraete followed with a 213, and Martin bowled a 196. Hartzler added a 189 to the team score, and Callan scored a 170. Despite being down late in the match, Starr’s three strikes and Martin’s two in the 10th frame led NU over the Saints, 1,015-1,010. 

With a 1-0 lead in the mega-match, the Huskers kept the momentum going into the total-pinfall baker five match, topping Maryville in game one, 216-183. The Cornhuskers rolled a 196, led by Hartzler who bowled her fourth consecutive strike in the second, increasing their lead to 53. The Saints bowled a 245 in game three over the Huskers’ 190, taking the overall match lead. The Big Red were again topped in game four, 189-146. In the final game, NU scored a 190 to the Saints’ 145, with Martin shooting for the tie in the 10th. Both teams finished 938-938 through five games and went to an extra five frames. Despite having two strikes in the extra frames, the Huskers were topped by Maryville, 97-88, bringing the mega-match to a 1-1 tie. 

The Huskers bowled a clean 224 in game one of the best-of-seven baker match, topping the Saints, 224-179. Maryville brought it back, rolling a 205 in game two. Behind three-straight strikes late in the third, NU took down Maryville, 206-202. The Huskers again won in game four, 228-157, bringing their match lead to 3-1. The Big Red finished off Maryville in the fifth, striking eight times to win 253-218, winning the Pittsburgh Regional finals, 2-1. 

Competition for the Huskers resumes in Las Vegas, Nev., as Nebraska travels to the 2025 NCAA Bowling Championships at the Suncoast Bowling Center, April 11-12.
